In celebration of Darwin Day 2016 I gave a public talk at the 6th Annual Reno Darwin Day at the Discovery Museum in Reno, NV.

Work in the Leonard Lab was featured on PBS' Deep Look

In February 2016, I organised an event at the Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada (gssn.org). With the help of a live bumblebee colony, an insect collection and a collection of different types of honey, we talked about native pollinators in Nevada, bee life cycles and how we became bee researchers.

In June 2015, I was a co-organizer for National Pollinator Week events in Nevada. We exhibited a live bumblebee colony at UNR's pollinator garden and spoke to the public about pollinators (around 180 visitors).

Between January and March 2015, Anne Leonard, Jake Francis and myself met with Los Angeles-based artist Jessica Rath. We discussed our science with her for inspiration for her exhibit, 'A Better Nectar'. Through this exhibit, put on at California State University, Long Beach Art Museum, appx. 1,500 schoolchildren took part in an educational program on pollination in line with CA curricular standards. The exhibit was written up in LA Weekly.

In November 2014 I talked to girl scouts (ages 16-18) from local schools in Reno, Nevada (gssn.org) about becoming women in science. After a talk about what it means to be a scientist we showed off our bumblebee colonies and talked about bees and behaviour.

I also gave two guest classes at Sage Ridge prepatory school in Reno for 5th grade (10 year-olds). After talking about what scientists do, bee research and native pollinators, the students got to see a bumblebee colony and ask questions.

In June 2014 I was a co-organizer for National Pollinator Week events. This involved exhibiting a live bumblebee colony at the Nevada Discovery Museum, and at the 2014 “Evening to Celebrate Pollinators” at the Great Basin Community Food Co-op (est. attendance: 50 visitors).

In August 2013 I took part in Community Outreach at the Natural History Museum in Boulder, Colorado. For this event I helped design games relating to animals’ sensory systems to teach children and their parents about topics in sensory ecology. Some photos from that event are in the slideshow below

2006 – 2009 - During my undergraduate degree I worked at Edinburgh Butterfly & Insect World, where I gave both daily lectures to large groups of children and their parents as well as teaching smaller school groups and children individually.
