Mentoring

Over the course of my academic career I have supervised 19 undergraduate students. These students have been actively involved in the scientific process: reading papers, discussing research, designing experiments and co-authoring papers.

Prag Patel presents his research on pollen fatty acids and how they affect bumblebee behaviour at the Nevada Undergraduate Research Symposium - Apr 2018

In 2016 Trent Cooper presented data he collected
at the UNR College of Science poster session.

Two of my undergraduate students (Rene Bonilla and Emily Breslow) entered the UNR College of Science poster session in 2015 at UNR. They both did excellently, with Emily taking home 1st place!

Teaching

At the University of Nevada, Reno:
2018    ‘Applying for postdocs and postdoc funding’, seminar for postgraduate-level ecology students.
2015-2017 Guest lecture: ‘Bees as a window into animal cognition’ for an undergraduate course,
             ‘Introduction to Neuroscience’ (~150 students).
2016    Presentation and discussion with graduate-level Neuroscience students for 'Neuro journal club'.
2015    Organized and ran a grad-student (1-credit) level reading group based around the book ‘Cognition, Evolution and                Behavior’ by Shettleworth. This involves a weekly discussion of concepts from the book combined with discussion              of relevant manuscripts.
2015    Designed a lab practical for 23 undergraduate neuroscience students. Following an introductory lecture, students              worked with live bees to address the question of ‘Associative learning in bumblebees’.
2014    Guest lecture: ‘Science and the Media’ for the undergraduate honours course, ‘How Science Works’.

Teaching outside the university:
2015    Guest lecture for Biology students at Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC): ‘Animal cognition’.
2015    Gave two guest classes in a local school (Sage ridge) for 5th-graders (age 10) where I talked about what it is to be              a scientist, some of the research I do and about bees native to Nevada. Each class was approx. 20

At the University of St Andrews as a PhD student:
2012    Teaching assistant and lecturer: Practical Statistics for Biologists (in R)
2011    Teaching assistant: Ecosystems and Conservation (statistics workshop in R)
2011    Teaching assistant: Practical Statistics for Biologists (in R)
2011    Teaching assistant: Skills for biologists (statistics workshop in SPSS)
2010    Teaching assistant: Skills for biologists (statistics workshop in SPSS)
